location:
Rogerley Mine, Frosterley, Co. Durham, England, UK
description: The Rogerley Mine, located near Frosterley in County Durham, England, is a famous commercial specimen mine situated within the Weardale region of the Northern Pennine Orefield. Geologically, the deposit consists of fluorite-bearing hydrothermal vein systems and replacement bodies hosted within Carboniferous limestone strata, particularly the Great Limestone member. Originally worked on a small scale for lead and iron during the nineteenth century, the mine gained modern international acclaim when private operators reopened it specifically for mineral specimen recovery starting in the late twentieth century. It became world-renowned among collectors for producing world-class, deep green fluorite specimens that exhibit intense daylight fluorescence, turning a vibrant purple under ambient natural light.
Attractive lustrous translucent sharp green cubic crystals of fluorite to 1.7 cm on edge across the top of matrix. The specimen is accented nicely with sugary micro crystals of sparkling colorless quartz. In good condition with very minimal cleaving present as seen. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. Brightly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light.
