Heights Mine, Weardale, Co. Durham, England, UK
description: The Heights Mine, located near Westgate in Weardale, County Durham, England, UK, is a world-famous locality celebrated for its exceptional mineral specimens, particularly its vibrant green fluorite crystals that display striking blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Situated within the Northern Pennine Orefield, the area features a geological setting dominated by Carboniferous limestone and sandstone beds intersected by hydrothermal veins rich in minerals. Historically operated during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries primarily for the extraction of iron ore and fluorite, the mine eventually closed for commercial production but gained immense fame among mineral collectors. Today, it remains an iconic English site revered by collectors for producing iconic, gemmy twin fluorite specimens alongside associated minerals like galena, quartz, and siderite.
Beautiful combination piece with glassy gemmy twinned crystal grouping of fluorite to 2.3 x 2.2 x 1.5 cm in size perched atop a grouping of non-lustrous but sharp crystals of galena. In very good condition. The fluorite is brightly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light. Choice miniature for this British classic. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm (miniature)
