Fluorite with Barite
specimen number:
9892155
location:
Desert Rose mine, Bingham, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA
description: The Desert Rose Mine, located near Bingham within the famous Hansonburg Mining District of Socorro County, New Mexico, features hydrothermal lead and copper replacement deposits hosted in Pennsylvanian Council Springs limestone. Historically prospected as part of the broader Hansonburg district since the late nineteenth century for lead and secondary base metal ores, the mine incorporates underground workings such as the Downey stope. Rather than commercial ore production, the site gained prominent renown among mineral collectors due to its accessible mineralized vugs and open pockets. The Desert Rose Mine is celebrated for producing fine collector specimens of fluorite, which occurs in vibrant green, blue, and lilac hues exhibiting complex cubic and hexoctahedral crystal forms, alongside tabular white baryte blades, galena, quartz, and secondary copper carbonates.
Attractive semi lustrous translucent blue cubic crystals of fluorite to 1.2 cm in size across the front of a cluster of white colorless mostly gemmy to translucent barite crystals. Cleaving is present to some of the barite crystals as seen. Crystallized completely all around, nice color contrast.
