Fluorite with Barite
specimen number:
2063003
location:
Highway 17 roadcut, Yesno, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada
description: The geology of the Highway 17 roadcut in Yesno Township near Rossport, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, features hydrothermally mineralized veins crosscutting pink to grey hornblende and biotite granite host rock along steeply dipping joint systems. While commercial mining and quarrying operations were never established here, the location has become well known for mineral collecting. Enthusiasts and collectors target the roadside rock cuts and nearby Lake Superior shoreline exposures to find specimens of barite and striking dark purple fluorite cubic crystals, frequently accompanied by quartz and minor sulfides.
Collected in 1968, lustrous deep purple cubic crystals of fluorite to 0.2 cm in size covering most of one side of matrix with white bladed barite. In good condition with minimal damage to one edge. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
