Fluorite
specimen number:
2063318
location:
Felix Mine, Azusa, Los Angeles Co., California, USA
description: Located in the San Gabriel Mountains near Azusa in Los Angeles County, California, the Felix Mine is a former small-scale fluorspar deposit where hydrothermally deposited fluorite veins crosscut decomposed granitic host rock. Operation of the mine began in the late nineteenth century and continued sporadically into the early twentieth century, but the site gained enduring fame among mineral collectors as one of Southern California's finest sources of fluorite specimens. Collectors highly value the location for its distinct, light to deep green cubo-octahedral fluorite crystals, which often display bright blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light and occasionally contain minute inclusions of minerals such as cinnabar, galena, and chalcopyrite.
A cluster of emerald green gemmy lustrous octahedral fluorite crystals, the largest measuring 4.5 cm across. There is very little attached matrix. In excellent condition, the quality is quite good for this locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. The label notes that the piece was collected by Tish Hunter and Bob Housley in October, 1993.
