Fluorite
specimen number:
2062919
location:
Sturgeon Bay quarry, Door Co., Wisconsin, USA
description: The Sturgeon Bay area in Door County, Wisconsin, features bedrock composed of shallow-marine Silurian dolostone formed roughly 425 million years ago. Local quarries, historically established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for building stone and crushed aggregate, occasionally exposed vugs and cavities within the carbonate strata. These cavities served as hosting pockets for hydrothermal mineral crystallization, yielding notable specimens of zoned clear, brown, and yellow cubic fluorite crystals often associated with calcite. Over the decades, abandoned quarries and local excavations became well-known collecting sites among mineral enthusiasts and researchers for these distinctive, fluorescent fluorite occurrences.
Small mostly gemmy amber colored cubic crystals of fluorite to 0.5 cm in size, maybe three crystals present, across the top of a sparkling fossilized coral. In good condition. Interesting locality example. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark
Size: 6.5 x 5.0 x 1.5 cm (small-cabinet)
