Ferrowinchite (?)

specimen number:
2354101

location:
Bong Mine, Bong Town, Liberia

description:
Lustrous brown masses to 0.5 cm in size scattered throughout a matrix of black to greenish pyrophyllite.

Situated in Bong County, Liberia, the Bong Mine near Bong Town is hosted within Precambrian banded iron formations containing massive reserves of itabirite-type iron ore that were extensively exploited for decades by international mining ventures until operations ceased due to regional conflict in the early 1990s. The locality is also known among mineral collectors for hosting various silicate phases, including ferro-winchite. Regarding its status, ferro-winchite is recognized in mineralogical literature as a named amphibole group member, but it lacks formal approval as a distinct, standalone mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association, positioning it currently as an unverified or potential end-member rather than an officially validated species.
