Euxenite-Y

specimen number:
2063303

location:
Uranium King Mine, Carbon Co., Wyoming, USA

description:
A thick glassy black mass with little attached matrix. Good example for the species.

Located in Carbon County, Wyoming, near Encampment, the Uranium King Mine is hosted within Precambrian granitic and pegmatitic rocks. Discovered during the post-World War II atomic boom, the site was explored and mined primarily during the 1950s for radioactive minerals. While commercial mining operations were brief, the locality became well known among mineral collectors for yielding rare radioactive species, including dark, lustrous masses of euxenite, uraninite, and associated rare-earth-bearing minerals embedded in coarse pegmatitic quartz and feldspar matrix.
