Eudialyte

specimen number:
2063464

location:
Kangerluarsuk Fjord, Ilimaussaq, Kujalleq, Greenland

description:
A grouping of large deep brownish red lustrous well-formed crystals of eudialyte. These crystals measure to almost 4.0 cm in size, very large for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from Ray DeMark, as well as one from Greenland specialist Ole Peterson. Really fine for the species.

Located within the Ilimaussaq alkaline complex in Kujalleq, Greenland, Kangerluarsuk Fjord cuts through a rare Mesoproterozoic intrusion renowned for its unique peralkaline nepheline syenites and diverse agpaitic rock formations. Explored by mineralogists since the early nineteenth century, the region features dramatic layered rocks like kakortokite and complex pegmatites formed through extreme magmatic fractionation. Among the most characteristic minerals found here is eudialyte, a complex ring silicate that often forms striking red or pink masses and crystals within the coarse-grained rocks. The area has long served as a legendary destination for mineral collectors and researchers studying rare-element geochemistry, with ongoing interest in its potential for critical material extraction.
