Dunton Mine, Newry, Maine, USA
description: Located on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine, the Dunton Mine is situated within a highly evolved, lithium-rich granite pegmatite intruded into regional metamorphic host rocks. Discovered in 1898 by Henry C. Hall and named after early lessee Hollis Dunton, the site became world-famous in October 1972 following the discovery of a massive pocket system containing nearly two tons of gem-quality tourmaline crystals. Considered one of the most significant mineral finds in North American history, the locality produced extraordinary specimens of vibrant pink, green, and watermelon tourmaline that remain highly prized by collectors, researchers, and gemologists worldwide.
A loose gem green lustrous single terminated crystal grouping of elbaite. Complete all around and in good condition. This weighs 2.34 g. Nice thumbnail for this classic locality.
