Dundasite with Crocoite
specimen number:
2354206
location:
Adelaide Mine, Dundas, Tasmania, Australia
description: Located in the mineral-rich Dundas mineral field of western Tasmania, Australia, the Adelaide Mine is hosted within altered Cambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks associated with extensive regional faulting and hydrothermal mineralization. The deposit formed through deep-seated hydrothermal fluid circulation that concentrated lead, silver, and other elements into complex carbonate-barite vein systems. Discovered in the late 19th century, the mine has a storied history of small-scale commercial and historical mining operations driven by high silver and lead grades. Today, it is globally celebrated by mineral collectors and museums as one of the world's premier localities for exceptional, vividly colored specimens of crocoite, a secondary lead chromate mineral prized for its brilliant red-orange prismatic crystals.
Most of the top of this matrix is covered by white botryoidal crystallized dundasite. Tiny orange red crystals of crocoite are scattered throughout. In good condition, very choice example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.
Size: 5.5 x 3.7 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
