Dravite
specimen number:
2354012
location:
South deposit, Yinnietharra, Western Australia, Australia
description: The South deposit at Yinnietharra, located in the Upper Gascoyne region of Western Australia, is world-renowned among mineral collectors for producing extraordinary, large, well-formed dark brown dravite tourmaline crystals embedded within a phlogopite schist matrix. Geologically, the deposit consists of a zone roughly 5 meters wide extending several hundred meters long within high-grade Precambrian metamorphic rocks. First discovered in 1918, the locality underwent major specimen mining between 1968 and 1971 under leaseholder A. Soklich, who extracted over 12 tons of fine dravite specimens. Further work at the South Open Cut from 2010 onward continued to yield remarkable single crystals and clusters weighing up to 7 kg, solidifying its status as one of the premier global localities for dravite specimens.
Classic Australian specimen, this a grouping of lustrous brown terminated dravite crystals. In great condition.
