Donpeacorite
specimen number:
2354247
location:
Balmat #4 Mine (2500' Level), St. Lawrence Co., New York, USA
description: Located within the historic Balmat-Edwards zinc mining district of St. Lawrence County, New York, the Balmat Number 4 Mine is renowned for its complex Grenville-age metamorphic geology featuring heavily deformed and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, including rich siliceous marbles. Deep underground operations, particularly around the 2500-foot level, encountered unusual manganese-rich and boron-bearing lithologies exposed to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism. These localized pockets yielded rare mineral assemblages collected by dedicated mineralogists and enthusiasts. Most notably, this specific mine level serves as the type locality for donpeacorite, a rare manganese-magnesium pyroxene mineral discovered in association with other unusual species like turneaureite and various amphiboles during subterranean mining development in the late twentieth century.
Yellow orange mass of donpeacorite. Good rich example for the species.
Size: 6.0 x 3.5 x 3.5 cm (small-cabinet)
