Dioptase with Wulfenite
specimen number:
2063186
location:
Mammoth-St. Anthony Mine, Tiger, Pinal Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Mammoth-St. Anthony Mine near Tiger, Arizona, is situated in a complex geologic setting where Tertiary rhyolite dikes intrude Precambrian quartz monzonite, creating extensive polymetallic vein systems deeply oxidized by hydrothermal activity. Discovered in the late 19th century and consolidated in the 1930s, the site operated primarily as a prolific underground producer of gold, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and vanadium until its closure in 1952. Beyond its industrial production, the mine achieved global renown among mineral collectors for its exceptionally diverse and pristine suite of rare secondary minerals, particularly brilliant orange wulfenite crystals.
Throughout this brecciated matrix is rich sparkling green micro crystals of dioptase. Many partial platy crystals of wulfenite are present. Good reference quality example for this famous locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. His label notes that he acquired this in the middle 1950s.
