Dioptase with Cerussite
specimen number:
2062995
location:
Kimbedi, Mindouli, Pool, Republic of the Congo
description: Kimbedi, located in the Mindouli district of the Pool Department in the Republic of the Congo, features a complex geological setting characterized by faulted contacts between older Neoproterozoic stromatolitic limestones and younger pink sandstones. This unique environment created rich polymetallic occurrences that have supported local extraction for centuries. Historical mining and modern prospecting in the area focus primarily on rich secondary mineral formations along these geological boundaries, making the region internationally famous among mineral collectors for yielding superb minerals such as dioptase.
An attractive specimen showing lustrous deep green crystals of prismatic sharply terminated dioptase to 1.5 cm in height standing up from matrix. There are several smaller dioptase crystals present, as well is a nondescript crystal of cerussite. This is in very good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.0 x 5.5 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
