Diopside
specimen number:

location:
Chamachhu, Roundu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
description: Located within the rugged terrain of the Haramosh Mountains in Roundu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, the Chamachhu locality is celebrated among mineral collectors for yielding exquisite gem-quality specimens rather than supporting large-scale commercial mining. Geologically, the area is defined by complex metamorphic terranes shaped by the intense tectonic collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Within these metamorphic host rocks, localized hydrothermal and regional metamorphic processes facilitate the crystallization of rare minerals. The crown jewel of these discoveries is the local chromium rich diopside, which forms sharp, intensely vibrant green crystals. Unlike variants found in alkaline igneous settings elsewhere in the world, the Chamachhu diopside derives its striking emerald hue from trace amounts of chromium integrated within a metamorphic genesis, making highly coveted mineral specimens sought after by global collectors.
A lustrous sharp deep green loose prismatic terminated crystal of diopside. The color is due to the presence of chromium. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
