location:
Kimberley, Sol Plaatje, Frances Baard, Northern Cape, South Africa
description: Located in the Northern Cape region of South Africa, Kimberley became the birthplace of modern diamond mining following the 1866 discovery of diamonds along the Vaal River and the subsequent 1871 strike at Colesberg Kopje. Geological activity roughly 90 to 100 million years ago forced volcanic diamond-bearing rock, now known as kimberlite, up through deep mantle pipes to create these rich deposits. The intensive surface digging formed the famous Big Hole, yielding millions of carats and establishing major mining operations while making the district a cornerstone for world diamond history and mineral collecting.
A loose lustrous sharply formed octahedral crystal of diamond. This is lustrous and slightly translucent. Complete all around and in perfect condition. This weighs 5.9 carats.
