Davidite-La
specimen number:
2354099
location:
Beqtau-Ata, Aktogay, Karaganda, Kazakhstan
description: Located in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, the Beqtau-Ata massif is a striking granitic intrusion characterized by weathered domes, dikes, and hollows formed within the southern Kazakh Uplands. The area is well known to mineral collectors and geologists for producing notable specimens of rare earth minerals, particularly the lanthanum-rich member of the davidite group. These dark, semi-metallic, and sometimes metamict oxide masses occur within pegmatitic and hydrothermal environments associated with the granitic rocks. While the region has an ancient history of local activity and archaeological significance, modern interest centers primarily on mineralogical exploration and the recovery of unusual accessory phases from the plutonic complex.
A superb crystal for the species, lustrous black with little attached matrix throughout. Sharp and very bright.
