Datolite
specimen number:
2062915
location:
Roncari Quarry, East Granby, Connecticut, USA
description: The Roncari Quarry in East Granby, Connecticut, is an active commercial trap rock operation working within the Jurassic-age Holyoke Basalt. Geologically, the site features extensive volcanic flows, gas-bubble vesicles, and fault-zone breccias that create ideal environments for secondary mineral deposition. Over the decades, commercial aggregate mining exposed these cavities, turning the quarry into a premier collecting locality for mineral enthusiasts. Through coordinated club field trips and careful hard-rock prospecting, collectors have recovered some of the finest crystal specimens in the region. The quarry is especially renowned for producing exceptionally sharp, glass-like crystals of datolite, often displaying pale green or white hues and frequently perched on pale green botryoidal prehnite crusts.
Glassy partly gemmy yellowish green crystals of datolite measuring to 2.7 cm in size across the top of matrix. Some damage present along the edges of the matrix only, the prominent crystals are in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. This is said to have been collected by Earl Bentley in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
