Cuprosklodowskite with Rutherfordine
specimen number:
2354298
location:
Musonoi Mine, Kolwezi, Mutshatsha, Lualaba, DR Congo
description: A superb cabinet sized example for the species, the front side of this matrix is approximately two thirds covered with green lustrous acicular crystals of cuprosklodowskite to 0.3 cm in size. Rutherfordine is present as well. In very good condition. The Musonoi Mine near Kolwezi within the prolific copper-cobalt belt of the Democratic Republic of Congo is globally renowned for its exceptional supergene oxidation zone that has yielded some of the world's most breathtaking mineral specimens. Intensive open-pit mining operations over the decades exposed rich secondary mineralization zones where circulating meteoric waters interacted with primary sulfide ores. Among the most celebrated treasures from this locality is cuprosklodowskite, a striking secondary copper and uranium silicate mineral that forms brilliant, vibrant green, acicular crystal sprays and radiating crusts perched on matrix. The combination of unique regional geology, extensive industrial excavation, and mineral collector enthusiasm has made Musonoi specimens legendary among international mineral enthusiasts, though strict access and changing mining conditions now make high-end pieces exceptionally scarce.
