Crandallite
specimen number:
2063182
location:
Mont-des-Groseillers, Blaton , Bernissart , Hainaut , Wallonia , Belgium
description: The geology of the Mont-des-Groseillers area in Blaton, near Bernissart within the Hainaut province of Wallonia, Belgium, is characterized by sedimentary formations and structural complexities associated with the Mons Basin, featuring Cretaceous and Paleozoic strata affected by extensive historical mining and canal excavation. Mining in this region historically focused on rich coal deposits and industrial minerals, while surface and subsurface exposures along local excavations and spoil heaps became well known to mineral collectors for yielding secondary phosphate species. Among these discoveries, the local occurrence of crandallite forms as a secondary alteration product, typically appearing as white to beige, fibrous or radiating crystal crusts and micro-nodules within weathered pockets of the host rock.
Black radiating crystals of crandallite covering most of one side of this matrix. Classic locality for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 8.0 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
