Covellite
specimen number:
2063111
location:
Summitville, Rio Grande Co., Colorado, USA
description: Located in the San Juan Mountains of Rio Grande County, Colorado, Summitville is a historic high-altitude mining district where gold and silver discoveries in the 1870s sparked a rugged mining camp boom. Geologically characterized by Tertiary volcanic rocks altered by hydrothermal activity, the district became well known for producing copper along with precious metals, yielding notable specimens of the secondary copper sulfide mineral covellite that attracted mineral collectors over the decades.
Choice Colorado classic, this an aesthetic grouping of thin bladed dark somewhat iridescent to purplish crystals of covellite. Typical of these minimal micro-damage present, this still in good condition. Nice freestanding crystals. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
