Copper
specimen number:
2354008
location:
Itauz Mine, Satpayev, Ulytau, Kazakhstan
description: Located within the Zhilandy mining group near Satpayev in the Ulytau Region of Kazakhstan, the Itauz Mine is part of the vast sandstone-hosted copper deposits of central Kazakhstan. Geologically, the deposit consists of stratabound sulfide copper ores hosted in sedimentary strata, with a well-developed secondary oxidation zone near the surface. Open-pit and underground mining operations focused primarily on extracting copper ore, but the site gained world renown among mineral collectors in the late 1990s and early 2000s for producing exceptional, highly sculptural specimens of crystallized native copper, often featuring sharp spinel-twin crystals associated with cuprite and malachite.
Loose grouping of very well crystallized native copper. In good condition.
