Clinohumite with Calcite, Phlogopite, Diopside
specimen number:
2354113
location:
Twin Lakes, Fresno Co., California, USA
description: Situated in the high Sierra Nevada within the Kaiser Wilderness of Fresno County, California, the Twin Lakes area features pre-Cretaceous limestone roof pendants altered by granitic intrusions into complex skarn and calc-silicate hornfels formations. This rugged and remote alpine environment has historically attracted dedicated mineralogists and field collectors via strenuous hiking trails rather than large-scale commercial mining operations. Within these contact metamorphic zones, collectors and researchers have discovered a rich variety of uncommon accessory minerals, notably including clinohumite, which appears as small, distinctive yellowish-orange or striated crystals embedded directly within the crystalline limestone and skarn matrix.
One side of this matrix is mostly covered with yellow granular aggregates of clinohumite. Good reference example for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski who collected the piece in 2003.
