Chalcocite
specimen number:
8911035
location:
Flambeau Mine, Rusk Co., Wisconsin, USA
description: Located near Ladysmith in Rusk County, Wisconsin, the Reclaimed Flambeau Mine is a notable volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit that formed during the Paleoproterozoic era within ancient volcanic arc environments. Discovered in 1968, the high-grade copper deposit was operated as an open-pit mine by Flambeau Mining Company during the 1990s, producing significant quantities of copper, gold, and silver. Mineral collectors prize the site for exceptional malachite, azurite, chalcocite, and native copper specimens recovered during its active mining phase. Following the conclusion of commercial extraction in 1997, the property underwent a celebrated environmental reclamation project and was transformed into a multi-use area featuring grasslands, wetlands, and industrial park spaces.
Small but choice grouping of twinned iridescent blue chalcocite crystals without matrix. In good condition.
