location:
Gads Hill, Meander Valley, Tasmania, Australia
description: Gads Hill is a locality situated within the Meander Valley municipality of northwestern Tasmania, Australia, known geologically for the extensive tertiary basalt formations exposed by road cuts and local terrain. Within the cavities and vesicles of these volcanic rocks, collectors and mineralogists have discovered fine mineral specimens, most notably chabazite. The specific variety found at this site is known as phacolite, which forms distinct, lens-shaped or pseudo-hexagonal twinned crystals that are typically colorless, glassy, and transparent to translucent.
The front of this matrix is covered with lustrous slightly translucent crystals of chabazite to 0.8 cm in size. This is the variety of the species known as phacolite. This is in good condition. Nice thumbnail for the species and locality.
Size: 3.4 x 3.0 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)
