Celestine with Calcite
specimen number:
2062804
location:
Pugh Quarry, Wood County, Ohio, USA
description: The Pugh Quarry near Custar, Ohio, is a commercial limestone excavation site situated within Paleozoic sedimentary bedrock layers typical of northwestern Ohio. Operationally established to extract aggregate for industrial and construction purposes, the quarry became widely celebrated among mineral collectors for the cavity vugs found within its limestone walls. These cavities historically yielded exceptional crystal specimens, most notably amber to golden calcite, celestite, fluorite, and pyrite. Although active commercial operations and restricted access eventually limited private collecting, the site remains a notable locality in midwestern mineralogical history for its well-preserved cavity mineralization.
Classic specimen from Ohio with attractive blue crystals of Celestine, these lustrous and slightly translucent, measuring to 0.5 cm in height across the top of matrix with scalenohedral crystals of calcite. Most of the calcite crystals are small, there is one scalenohedral crystal measuring 1.4 cm in height. This is in very good condition. Specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
