Celestine
specimen number:
2063058
location:
Chittenango Falls, Fenner, Madison Co., New York, USA
description: Chittenango Falls in Madison County, New York, features a prominent waterfall cascading over Paleozoic sedimentary rock formations, specifically ancient limestone and shale layers. Historically, the rushing waters of the area powered local mills and factories during the 19th century, while regional road cuts and outcrops became known to mineral enthusiasts for producing fine specimen materials. The notable mineral found at this locality is celestine, which typically occurs as lustrous, transparent to pale blue-gray crystal clusters or linings inside cavities and vugs within the local brown limestone matrix. Collecting activities here have largely transitioned into historical record as local sites became protected or off-limits over time, leaving these classic specimens prized by vintage mineral collectors.
Excellent thumbnail for this classic locality. A grouping of pale blue semi lustrous to lustrous slightly translucent sharply formed crystals of Celestine with very little attached matrix. In excellent condition.
