Celestine
specimen number:
2062722
location:
Meckley's Quarry, Mandata, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, USA
description: Meckley's Quarry near Mandata, Pennsylvania, exposes Paleozoic sedimentary bedrock, specifically classic limestone and dolostone formations such as the Keyser and Tonoloway units, which are renowned among mineral collectors for cavities containing distinct crystals like celestine and calcite. Commercial extraction at the site began during the mid 1930s when local operations initially focused on burning limestone for agricultural lime before expanding into pulverized products. Over subsequent decades, the quarry evolved into a large scale commercial aggregate producer supplying construction materials and road stone for the region while maintaining a rich history of family ownership.
Lustrous mostly gemmy blue prismatic crystals of Celestine measuring to 2.8 cm in length across the front of matrix with sparkling crystallized calcite. The crystals are present on the bottom of the specimen as well. In good condition. Nice locality example for the species. The specimen comes with a collection label from Ray DeMark.
