Cancrinite with Sodalite
specimen number:
2063305
location:
Egan Chute, York River area, Dungannon, Bancroft, Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada
description: Located along the York River near Bancroft in Dungannon Township, Ontario, the Egan Chute area is famous for its silica-undersaturated nepheline syenite pegmatites formed during the ancient Grenville Orogeny. Historic exploration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries focused on extracting industrial nepheline and sodalite, making the region famous among rockhounds for rich pockets of deep blue sodalite intertwined with yellow cancrinite. Today, the site lies within Egan Chutes Provincial Park, where mineral collecting is strictly prohibited to preserve these unique geological exposures.
Very rich yellowish green masses of cancrinite throughout this matrix with blue sodalite. Collected in 1968, the specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
