Calcite
specimen number:
8911123
location:
Manaoshan Mine, Dongpo, Suxian, Chenzhou, Hunan, China
description: Light pink lustrous translucent rhombohedral crystals of calcite measuring to 2.0 cm in size stacked on top of each other across the top of a massive calcite matrix. Brightly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection. The Manaoshan Mine within the Dongpo ore field of Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China, is situated in a complex and highly mineralized regional geology defined by extensive carbonate sedimentary sequences cut by intrusive magmatic bodies. This deep tectonic and hydrothermal activity created rich polymetallic deposits, yielding substantial iron, manganese, and associated laterite-type gold resources. Historically operated as an industrial mining area, the locality has gained considerable attention among mineral collectors worldwide for producing exceptional specimen varieties, including distinct manganese-bearing calcite, dolomite, and other well-crystallized secondary mineral species derived from its weathered ore bodies and extensive underground workings.
Size: 8.0 x 5.0 x 2.0 cm (small-cabinet)
