Calcite
specimen number:
2341342
location:
Agoudal Mine, Bou Azzer, Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco
description: Located in the famous Bou Azzer mining district of the Draa-Tafilalet region in Morocco, the Agoudal site lies within Neoproterozoic igneous and sedimentary rocks of the Anti-Atlas mountain belt. The regional geology is dominated by hydrothermally altered ophiolites and fault zones where ore-bearing fluids deposited cobalt, nickel, and arsenic minerals alongside carbonates during ancient tectonic deformation. Historically mined primarily as part of the broader cobalt-nickel extraction operations in the district, the area has also gained high acclaim among mineral collectors for its exceptional secondary mineral specimens. Mineral collectors particularly prize the vibrant pink calcite specimens from Agoudal, which owe their distinctive magenta color to trace amounts of cobalt incorporated into the calcium carbonate crystal lattice during crystallization within hydrothermal veins.
A gorgeous hot pink sparkling botryoidal crystallized calcite attractively covering the front of this matrix. This is in good condition. The color is outstanding and really eye-catching. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jan Erik Larsen and dates to 2012.
