Calcite
specimen number:
2063570
location:
Level 18, San Bartolo Mine, Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico
description: Located in the Charcas mining district of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, the San Bartolo Mine operates within complex skarn and hydrothermal replacement deposits formed where Mesozoic limestone strata were intruded by Tertiary granodiorite and quartz monzonite stocks. Historic mining in the region dates back to the late sixteenth century following silver discoveries by Spanish colonists, with modern underground operations targeting rich silver, lead, and zinc sulfide ore bodies. Collectors around the world celebrate San Bartolo for producing magnificent mineral specimens, most notably highly lustrous, glass-like datolite crystals, brilliant pink manganoan calcite, and well-crystallized Danburite prisms, often resting on a matrix of dark green quartz or sulfide minerals. Although active industrial mining limits public collecting, specimen recovery operations over the decades have established this historic site as a classic Mexican mineral locality.
Interesting loose crystal grouping of calcite showing several different generations of crystallization. A floater that is complete all around and in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.5 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
