location:
Pine Creek Mine, Bishop, Inyo Co., California, USA
description: Situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Bishop in Inyo County, California, the Pine Creek Mine is a world-famous contact-metamorphic skarn deposit formed where Mesozoic granitic plutons intruded Paleozoic limestone beds. Discovered in 1916, the location was developed into one of the largest tungsten mines in the United States, operating extensively through much of the twentieth century under companies such as Union Carbide. In addition to commercial tungsten extraction, the mine became renowned among mineral collectors for producing magnificent specimens, including exceptionally large scheelite crystals, lustrous grossular and andradite garnets, epidote, vesuvianite, and various copper sulfide minerals.
Lustrous translucent almost pseudo-cubic rhombohedral crystals of calcite to 0.8 cm in size scattered across the top of matrix. The color is a light brown in the crystals are scattered aesthetically. In good condition. From 1988, the specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
