Very fine example of this Indiana classic, a grouping of butterscotch colored lustrous and mostly gemmy calcite crystals, the largest measuring to almost 4.0 cm in size, in an aesthetic cluster with little attached matrix. This is in excellent condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.

North Vernon in Jennings County, Indiana, is underlain by shallow-water Paleozoic sedimentary strata, primarily Devonian and Silurian limestones and dolomites formed in ancient marine environments. Commercial quarrying operations developed here during the 20th century to supply aggregate and building materials, creating extensive surface excavations. Local quarries, such as the prominent Paul Frank or Berry Materials operations, became internationally famous among mineral collectors for yielding exceptional, highly aesthetic honey-colored calcite crystals. These calcites frequently occur as distinct pseudo-dodecahedral or complex rhombohedral crystals featuring sharp, etched, or frosted faces that are prized by museum curators and private collectors alike.
