Calcite
specimen number:

location:
Newton County Stone Quarry, Kentland, Newton Co., Indiana, USA
description: The Newton County Stone Quarry near Kentland, Indiana, operates within the deeply eroded central uplift of the Kentland impact structure, a complex meteorite crater formed in Paleozoic bedrock. Commercial quarrying began around 1880 when local farmers started extracting crushed rock from heavily deformed, steeply tilted Ordovician and Silurian limestone and dolomite strata. Over the decades, mining operations have exposed rare geological features such as shatter cones, micro-faulted quartz, and breccias, making the site a world-famous destination for geologists and mineral collectors studying hyper-velocity impact structures.
A colorless lustrous mostly gemmy loose scalenohedral crystal of calcite. Good sharp faces and complete all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected this piece in the late 1950s.
Size: 6.0 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
