Calcite
specimen number:
2062898
location:
Lansing Mines, Brooksville, Hernando Co., Florida, USA
description: The Brooksville area in Hernando County sits prominently upon the Ocala Uplift, where ancient carbonate bedrock is characterized by extensive karst topography, solution cavities, and fossiliferous limestone formations. Historically, the region became well known for industrial lime-rock quarrying and commercial mining operations that excavated deep pits into the local strata, inadvertently exposing rich fossil deposits and hollow mineralized geodes lined with quartz and calcite crystals. Over decades, these abandoned or active quarries and surrounding spoil piles transformed into popular sites for rockhounds and amateur collectors searching for marine invertebrate fossils and mineral specimens.
Pale yellow crystallized grouping of transparent and lustrous crystallized calcite. In good condition all around. Specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.5 x 2.3 x 0.5 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
