location:
York Building Supply Quarry, York, York Co., Pennsylvania, USA
description: The York Building Supply Quarry in York County, Pennsylvania, operates as an active industrial aggregate site extracting stone from regional Cambrian-aged carbonate formations within the folded and faulted limestone valleys of the Piedmont geologic province. Over decades of commercial quarrying, operations have occasionally intersected significant vugs and open cavities within the limestone bedrock. This site has achieved renown among mineral collectors for producing world-class calcite specimens, typically recovered from large pockets lined with transparent to translucent crystals. The calcite found here is especially famous for its striking honey yellow to deep burnt orange colors, complex twinned habits, high luster, and sharp rhombohedral or scalenohedral forms that rank among the finest aesthetic carbonate minerals discovered in the eastern United States.
A gemmy yellowish orange sharp crystal of calcite to 2.8 cm across standing up perfectly from matrix. This is in super condition and is complete all around. Very choice for this Pennsylvania locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and was collected in the early 1990s.
