An unusual grouping of crystallized calcite on a chert matrix. The larger calcite crystal has been naturally partially dissolved, a second-generation forming within the hollow cavity left behind. The largest crystal measures almost 4.0 cm across. In good condition. A previous label comes with the specimen from the collection of Ray DeMark.

Mining in Cherokee County, Kansas, began in the mid-19th century and became a cornerstone of the historic Tri-State Mining District, which grew to be a world-leading producer of zinc and lead. Geologically, the region features surface and near-surface Mississippian-age carbonate rocks, specifically cherty limestones of the Ozark Plateau. Over millions of years, groundwater movement and erosion dissolved softer limestone layers and created porous, collapsed breccia zones that allowed metal-bearing hydrothermal solutions to deposit rich sulfide ores. Extensive underground extraction centered around towns like Galena and Baxter Springs until operations finally ceased in 1970, leaving a lasting industrial legacy across the landscape.
