Cafarsite
specimen number:
2062890
location:
Wanni glacier – Scherbadung, Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland
description: The Wanni glacier and Scherbadung region in the Binn Valley of Valais, Switzerland, features complex alpine geology composed of ancient gneiss and metamorphic rock formations permeated by mineral-rich clefts. Unlike the nearby Lengenbach commercial ore deposits, this high-altitude area has a history defined by dedicated mineral collecting rather than industrial mining, driven by rugged field exploration along high alpine ridges. This remote terrain is famous as the primary type locality for cafarsite, a rare mineral known for forming distinct, dark, lustrous crystals embedded within these specialized cleft environments.
Classic locality for the species, a good sharp crystal of Cafarsite measuring 0.5 cm across is set nicely on matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Wouter I. Van Tichelen.
Size: 3.5 x 2.0 x 1.0 cm (miniature)
