Brochantite with Atacamite
specimen number:
2062936
location:
La Verde Mine, Tierra Amarilla, Copiapo, Atacama, Chile
description: The La Verde Mine near Tierra Amarilla in the Copiapo province of Atacama, Chile, is situated within an arid metallogenic region characterized by volcanic host rocks such as andesite, featuring prominent copper-bearing manto and vein structures. Mining and collecting in this historic district date back centuries, driven by the rich oxidized zones of the Atacama Desert where weathering processes transformed primary sulfides into vibrant secondary minerals. Among these secondary products is brochantite, a striking emerald to dark green mineral that forms in arid oxidized copper deposits. Highly prized by mineral collectors for its delicate crystal clusters and needle-like prismatic habits, brochantite serves as both a visual indicator of localized copper enrichment and a testament to the region's extensive small-scale and historic mining heritage.
Vibrant green acicular crystals of brochantite attractive across the top of matrix. Minor atacamite is present. In great condition, collected in the 1970s. Previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark comes with the specimen.
