Boleite

specimen number:
2063652

location:
Amelia Mine, Boleo, Baja California, Mexico

description:
Fine cluster of lustrous blocky blue boleite crystals without matrix. In good condition.

The Amelia Mine in the El Boleo district near Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico, is a historically significant mining area originally developed for copper, cobalt, and manganese extraction within a unique marine sedimentary and clay-rich deposit. Commercial mining operations flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing international attention not only for base metal production but also for the extraordinary secondary minerals discovered in its oxidized zone. The mine serves as the type locality for boleite, a rare complex copper lead silver halide mineral that forms striking, deep indigo-blue cubic crystals. Because the Amelia Mine produced the world's finest and largest crystal specimens of boleite, often intergrown with related rare species like cumengeite, it remains legendary among advanced mineral collectors worldwide.
