Located in the massive Schlema-Alberoda uranium and hydrothermal ore district of the Erzgebirge in Saxony, Germany, Shaft 38 (Schacht 38) and its underground workings operated heavily under Soviet-German SDAG Wismut management from the late 1940s until production wound down and final closure occurred in 1990. Geologically, the specific locality designated as the Opal Vein (Gang Opal) on the 855-meter level (-855m Sohle) cuts through complex metamorphic and-or Paleozoic rock formations, hosting a rich hydrothermal vein assemblage. This mineralization is world-renowned among mineralogists for producing exceptional specimens of native bismuth, skutterudite, safflorite, dolomite, and quartz within specific extraction blocks like block 5078.
