Barite with Quartz
specimen number:
2063025
location:
Sherman Mine, Upper Iowa Gulch, Lake Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Sherman Mine, located near the head of Upper Iowa Gulch on the west side of Mount Sherman in Lake County, Colorado, sits within a rugged high-elevation glacial cirque. Geologically, the deposits consist of polymetallic silver and lead mineralization hosted within open-space karst systems and fault zones inside Mississippian-aged dolomite and limestone formations, which formed following regional tectonic uplift. Historically, modern underground operations began in the late 1960s with the driving of the Sherman Tunnel and major commercial production by companies like Day Mines and the Leadville Corporation during the 1970s and 1980s, yielding substantial quantities of silver and lead before active commercial mining eventually wound down.
An attractive yellowish grouping of tabular barite crystals, these lustrous and slightly translucent. Minor attached quartz is present. In good condition all around.
Size: 3.3 x 2.7 x 1.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
