Barite with Fluorite
specimen number:
2312086
location:
St Johannes Mine, Wolkenstein, Saxony, Germany
description: The St Johannes Mine, located near Wolkenstein in the Erzgebirge or Ore Mountains region of Saxony, Germany, has a long history of mining dating back to the medieval era, with intensive operations focused on extracting silver, cobalt, nickel, and bismuth ores from complex hydrothermal vein systems. Geologically, the area is situated within ancient metamorphic gneiss and schist formations that were intruded by Variscan granites, driving extensive fluid circulation along fault structures. These hydrothermal veins hosted a wide variety of metallic and gangue minerals. The historic underground workings have become well known among mineral collectors for producing fine specimens of minerals such as calcite, quartz, and various arsenide and sulfide species.
Bladed crystals of barite across the top of matrix hosting translucent cubic crystals of fluorite. In good condition with very minimal damage present.
Size: 9.0 x 9.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
