Barite on Fluorite
specimen number:
2062806
location:
Rosiclare, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
description: The geology of Rosiclare, Illinois, features complex fault zones and fissures cutting through Paleozoic sedimentary strata, primarily Mississippian limestones, which were filled by hydrothermal mineral solutions to create rich vein and bedded deposits. Mining history in the district began around 1842, evolving into the premier domestic source of fluorite in the United States and earning the region recognition as a major global producer for steelmaking, chemical, and ceramic industries until large-scale commercial underground operations ended in the late 20th century.
Lustrous colorless crystals of barite measuring to 1.5 cm in size nice across the top of a crystalline yellow brown fluorite matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. Note that the label gives the species as Celestine, this is barite.
Size: 6.5 x 6.0 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
Collection: Ray DeMark
