Barite
specimen number:
8911099
location:
Cerro Warihuyn, Miraflores, Huamalies, Huanuco, Peru
description: The mineral-rich Cerro Warihuyn locality near Miraflores in the Huamalies Province of the Huanuco Department, Peru, is part of the high-elevation polymetallic belt in the Peruvian Andes. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through fractured host rocks formed complex ore veins containing lead, zinc, and silver minerals alongside impressive gangue minerals. Collectors and mineralogists prize Cerro Warihuyn primarily for its world-class barite specimens, which feature exceptionally clear, tabular, glass-like crystals often arranged in distinctive rose-like clusters or sharp aesthetic groupings. Although local mining operations originally targeted base metals, mineral collectors quickly recognized the site's unique geological environment, making Cerro Warihuyn a legendary Andean source for fine display specimens of barite.
Glassy yellow gemmy crystals of tabular barite measuring to 2.0 x 1.4 x 0.4 cm in size coming aesthetically off matrix. All of the prominent crystals are in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection.
