Barite
specimen number:
2063494
location:
Pack Rat Claim, Carbon Co., Montana, USA
description: The Pack Rat Claim, located in Carbon County, Montana, is situated within the Pryors mineral district, where ancient sedimentary formations house unique mineralized collapse breccias and fracture zones. Geologically, the area is renowned for its low-temperature hydrothermal deposits hosted in Paleozoic limestones, where late-stage fluids deposited fine mineral specimens. The claim gained widespread notoriety among mineral collectors in the late 20th century following the discovery of exceptional barite crystals. These specimens, prized for their rich amber to honey-yellow color, high clarity, and well-formed tabular habit, were actively worked by private field collectors who extracted museum-quality groups from narrow vugs and underground cavities.
I think a very attractive specimen showing deep amber colored lustrous translucent to transparent bladed crystals of barite measuring to 1.5 cm in size nicely covering the top of matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. His label notes that the piece was collected in June, 1997 by Tom and Chris Tucker.
Size: 7.0 x 6.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
