Eagle Mine, Gilman, Eagle Co., Colorado, USA
description: Located in Eagle County, Colorado, USA, the Eagle Mine near Gilman is a famous carbonate replacement deposit situated in Paleozoic limestone and dolomite formations. Established in the late nineteenth century during the Colorado silver boom, the mine initially yielded rich silver and lead ores before becoming a massive producer of zinc and copper through the mid-twentieth century. Beyond its significant industrial mining history, the locality is legendary among mineral collectors for producing world-class specimens of dark brown sphalerite, shiny pyrite crystals, galena, and golden barite from its deep underground sulfide ore bodies and solution cavities.
Attractive glassy gemmy amber colored tabular crystals of barite measuring to 0.8 cm in size nice across the top of matrix. This is in good condition. Classic material for this locality, this is from the 1960s. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
