Barite
specimen number:
2063023
location:
Silius, South Sardinia, Sardinia, Italy
description: The Silius area in southeastern Sardinia features a major hydrothermal vein system hosted within Paleozoic metamorphic and metavolcanic basement rocks. The geology is characterized by extensive mineralized veins containing large quantities of fluorite alongside barite, quartz, and minor lead sulphides. Mining history at Silius spans several decades, establishing it as one of Europe's largest and most significant fluorspar deposits, with underground operations historically extracting massive amounts of industrial minerals and continuing into modern redevelopment efforts.
An attractive grouping of amber colored lustrous translucent barite crystals with little attached matrix. In good condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
